The columns

In the municipality of De Ronde Venen, memorial columns have been erected at the six places where war planes crashed in the Second World War. What is special is that this was done for both Allied and German aircraft, for friend and foe.

The columns are shaped like a lectern, made of weathering (corten) steel plate with a kink. In the foot is the date and underneath a crashing plane is saved. Note the cutout, which always corresponds to the silhouette of the war plane.

On the upper kinked part is attached the information panel with details of the aircraft, flight and crew. This information is the result of a major investigation by Mr. Chris van der Linden. He has extensively documented the accidents on the website Luchtoorlog Waverveen en omstreken. Below is a link to the relevant page of the mentioned website for each Memorial Column. Especially the pictures there are definitely worth it.

A suggestion from a resident has led to a project within the Historical Society De Proosdijlanden led by former alderman Jan van Breukelen, with this great result, 75 years after the last of the six accidents.

If you walk through the parking lot to the end, you will have a good view of the place. In the photo the cows are lying exactly where the plane crashed. The pasture there was slightly raised after the salvage operation in 2002.

Collage that Chris van der Linden received just before his death from the Historical Society De Proosdijlanden. At that time, the last two (German) Memorial Columns had been placed. In addition to these pictures, there is a youtube film of RTV De Ronde Venen nieuws over de onthulling

Highly recommended, especially since Chris van der Linden has his say.

The Memorial Column before the unveiling.

Afterwards, the memorial column was unveiled by alderman Mrs. Marja Becker and researcher Mr. Chris van der Linden. Chris was already seriously ill at the time, he passed away on August 20th 2019.

Out of respect for the fallen, there is applause.
